Nelson's Matti Erickson wins three gold medals at Canadian Track and Field Championships
Matti Erickson of Nelson shocked the field as the former L.V. Rogers athlete won three medals at the Canadian National Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Langley.
Erickson, who completed his freshman cross country season at the University of Oregon, won both the 800 meter and 1500-meter races in the U20 category.
Erickson’s performances warranted him being selected to the National team that will be travelling to Cali, Colombia at the end of July to compete for Canada at the World Championships.
Erickson won the 1500-meter event in a time of three minutes, 59.81 seconds.
He then captured the 800 meters in a time of 1:51.52.
These results secured a place on Team BC 4 X 400-meter relay, where Erickson hunted down the Team Ontario anchor leg runner to power the host province to the gold medal in a thrilling race in a time of 3:20.70.
Erickson, a 10-time BC High School Provincial champion, is coming off a fine 2021 season where the Kootenay Chaos runner established personal best times of 3:53.64 in the 1500 meters and 4:11.55 in the mile.
