Canada Day came and went the past two years, without any fanfare in Nelson as the COVID-19 pandemic severely curtailed public gatherings everywhere.

That will all end on Friday, July 1, 2022, when the Nelson Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual festivities at Rotary Lakeside Park in Nelson.

The day will again kick off with the Lion’s Club pancake breakfast on Baker Street in downtown Nelson.

Lions Club is pleased to announce the return of the sorely missed Canada Day tradition in Nelson with homemade pancakes, Oso Negro coffee and more.

For more than 50 years, Nelson Lions Club has been cooking up pancakes to raise funds for the community.

Each year hundreds of breakfasts are sold to raise funds for local student bursaries, the Club’s Community Grants program, sight and hearing programs for the elderly, and contributions to larger Lions International projects throughout the world.

Thanks to the $2000 donation from Nelson Home Building Centre to repair recent vandalism, the Lions Club Chuckwagon grill is back on wheels, and ready for Canada Day.

To reduce waste, guests are encouraged to bring their own plates, cutlery, and mugs where possible.

Breakfast is a recommended donation of $10, cash only please.

The festivities then shift to Lakeside Park for the Canada Day 2022 July 1.

The day begins with the opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m.

Chamber president Paul Wiest is joined by Nelson Mayor John Dooley, Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson, Shelly Boyd of the Arrow Lakes/Sinixt Facilitator for the Sinixt Confederacy/Colville Confederate Tribes, Rotary Club president as well as members of the local RCMP detachment, Nelson Police Department and Nelson Fire Department.

Following a day of entertainment, including Dallas Wolbaum, Nelson Community Band, Kootenay Kilties, Brenda McJones Dancers and the Moving Mosaic Samba Band, the day concludes with Fireworks display by the Nelson Professional Fire Fighters Association.

The fireworks are sponsored by City of Nelson, Regional District of Central Kootenay Area E, F & H, Nelson Chamber of Commerce and numerous local businesses.
