Winter storm warning for Highway 3 - Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass
After escaping a snowfall warning by Environment Canada last week, the Boundary/Kootenay region can expect to see additional amounts of the snow in the over the next few days.
Environment Canada issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region, including Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass that will run into Monday evening with total accumulations from 40 to 50 cm.
“A series of Pacific systems is bringing a prolonged period of snow to Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass,” Environment Canada said.
“Snow is expected to intensify tonight and continue through Monday night.”
Environment Canada said warmer air will arrive on Monday and raise the snow levels, which will give a risk of freezing rain Monday evening and Monday night.
“Snow will change to rain Tuesday morning,” Environment Canada said. “Melting snow could result in slippery and slushy conditions on the roads.”
Environment Canada said the public should consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve as surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Environment Canada said drivers can expect visibility to suddenly change and reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous.
Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
