Snowstorm forces City to cancel garbage/recycling collection for this week
Nelson residents will need to hold onto their garbage and recycling for another week after city staff announced Tuesday that collection will be delayed for another week due to the recent snowstorm that dropped copious amounts of snow Monday on the Heritage City.
“As you know, Nelson experienced an epic snowstorm that generated 70-80 cms of snow or more in our community overnight,” the emailed statement said.
“This is an incredible amount of snow for our residents and City crews to manage.”
“Due to these extreme levels of snow, the City of Nelson has made the decision to cancel this week’s garbage and recycling collection,” the statement added.
The City said it understands this decision may pose hardship to many residents, but management is concerned about workers safety due to the snow accumulations.
“We understand that this will be inconvenient for many of you, but it is important that our crews remain safe and focus their attention on dealing with the large accumulation of snow,” the City said.
“We ask for your patience and support as we complete this important work,” the statement added.
The main goal of public works crews is to remove snow to make streets in the city safe to use again, and get the community back moving again.
“There is more snow in the forecast, so it is doubly important we get our streets cleared,” City staff said.
The City said it will provide more details on options for managing garbage and recycling Wednesday.
In the meantime, the city staff is working to secure a large garbage bin to be placed by the Nelson airport terminal to allow residents to drop off garbage.
However, at this time NO RECYCLING will be accepted.
“Thank you to everyone who supported each other today and continues to support each other as we dig out from this monumental snowfall,” the statement said.
