Mallard's Team of the Week — Glacier Gymnastics Kootenay Zone Team
The news is not what four Glacier Gymnasts wanted to hear after qualifying for the 2022 BC Winter Games in Vernon.
Recently, the BC Games Society and Greater Vernon 2022 BC Winter Games made the difficult decision not to stage the BC Winter Games next month in the Central Okanagan community.
The decision means Anouk Prudhomme, Asia Szczepanski, Anni van Hellemond and Macy Loutit of the Glacier Club, who took the top four spots during the Virtual Trials which took place, Dec 18-30, 2021, will not represent the Kootenay Zone at the BC Winter Games.
Prud’homme, 13,, won the event and also captured the gold medals for vault, beam and floor.
Meanwhile, Szczepanski, 13, was close behind in 2nd place, with a gold medal performance on bars and silver on beam while Glacier’s youngest participant, 11-year-old, Anni van Hellemond rounded out the podium in 3rd place, with a silver medal on floor and bronze medals for vault, bars and beam.
Thirteen-year-old, Macy Loutit finished just behind her teammates in 4th place, with a silver medal on bars and a bronze on floor.
Mallard’s Source, realizing the decision regarding the 2022 BC Winter Games is a major disappointment, wanted to recognize the accomplishments of the Glacier gymnasts with Team of the Week honours.
Head coach Sandra Long is also pleased with the results from the Glacier athletes.
“We are proud of the girls for making the team,” Long explained. “They have returned to training inspired and motivated to improve their scoring potential.”
The BC Winter Games were to take place in Vernon, from Feb 24-27, 2022.
