It appears the Omicron variant has hit teams in the league with COVID-19 cases forcing the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League to postpone several weekend games in the division.

The KIJHL has postponed no less than seven weekend games, including Saturday’s 7 p.m. tilt at the NDCC Arena between the Nelson Leafs and Castlegar Rebels.

The contest has been postponed due to a “number of positive COVID-19 cases” involving the Castlegar Rebels.

Other games that will need to be rescheduled involve the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, Fernie Ghostriders and Kelowna Chiefs — who all have several positive COVID-19 cases.

The KIJHL has also been busy rescheduling games that were previously postponed between Creston and Golden, North Okanagan and Kelowna and games involving Chase and Sicamous and 100 Mile House.

The highly contagious Omicron variant is spreading a rate unlike anything seen during the start of the COVID-19, infecting more Canadians than at any other time during the pandemic.

The difference between Omicron and other variants is the incubation period is much shorter, where now people are starting to get sick in just two or three days.

No dates of when recently postponed weekend games will be rescheduled.
