Wildcats remain in hunt at Single-A Girls’ Volleyball Championships
Mount Sentinel Wildcats finished Day one of the BC High School Single-A Girls’ Volleyball Championships with a 3-1 record.
The Wildcats lost the opening best-of-three match 2-1 to Charles Bloom Secondary of Lumby before rallying to knock off Fort St. James and Ebenezer of Smithers, both by 2-0 scores in respective best-of-three matches.
Mount Sentinel also defeated Kings Christian of Salmon Arm 2-1.
Thursday’s games were held at Selkirk College Gymnasium in Castlegar.
The seven-team tournament — reduced from its originally scheduled 16-team affair due to road closures after recent Atmospheric River storms severely damaged BC highways — moves to Mount Sentinel High School for the duration of the event Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats face Cedars Christian from Prince George and Osoyoos Friday to conclude the round robin draw.
The playoff round opens Friday afternoon.
The final is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
LVR Bombers off to slow start at AAA Championships
Meanwhile in Vancouver, the L.V. Rogers Bombers started slow at the BC High School Girls’ AAA Volleyball Championships.
The Bombers lost the opening match to Windsor of North Vancouver 25-14, 25-19.
The road continued to be bumpy for the Bombers as top-ranked Mount Douglas of Victoria defeated LVR in straight sets, 25-15, 25-13.
“(I think the girls were) nervous and trying to find their ground, but felt good in second set . . . (we) just couldn’t pull It together quick enough to get ahead,” said Bomber coach Jennifer Kidd responding to the opening game jitters against Windsor.
Against Mount Douglas Kidd said the players were intimidated by the ranking and didn’t play a focused game.
LVR responded in the final match of the day, dumping Langley 26-24, 25-24.
However, Kidd said it took the first half of the set for the players to find their fire.
“The second set we came on strong and never let up,” Kidd said.
LVR meets fourth-ranked McMath of Richmond in Friday’s crossover game.
The final is set for Saturday.
