Wildcats edged out by Osoyoos Rattlers in final of BC High School Single-A Girls’ Volleyball Championships

The Osoyoos Rattlers defeated the host Wildcats in straight games to capture the BC High School Single-A Girls’ Volleyball Championships Saturday at the Mount Sentinel Gymnasium in South Slocan.
The Rattlers, finishing the tournament undefeated, defeated the silver-medal winning Cats 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 in the best-of-five final.
Mount Sentinel entered the contest finishing second in the round-robin pool to the Rattlers with a 4-2 record — defeating Fort St. James, Ebenezer of Smithers, Kings Christian of Salmon Arm and Cedars Christian of Prince George.
The Wildcats bounced Fort St. James in three sets — 25-17, 25-14. 25-20 — and Charles Bloom of Lumby in four sets — 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-18 — to advance to the final.
Osoyoos gained a bye into the playoff round and defeated Kings Christian in straight sets — 25-18, 25-14, 25-13 — to advance to the final against Mount Sentinel.
Charles Bloom defeated Kings Christian 2-1 in the best-of-three match to claim the bronze medal.
Mount Sentinel had two players selected to the Allstar team as Natasha Holland and Brynn Strelaeff both earned recognition during the Award’s Ceremony that followed the final.
Kayla Burns and Nevaeh Law were selected to the Allstar team from Osoyoos.
Outstanding Libero award went to Isabell Milton of Cedars Christian while Cassidy Burns of Osoyoos was selected the tournament Most Valuable Player.
Fort St. James won the Most Sportsmanlike Team trophy.
The BC High School tournament, which opened Thursday with games at Castlegar’s Selkirk College Gymnasium before moving to Mount Sentinel, was severely impacted by the recent Atmospheric River storms that devastated infrastructure and highways in the Lower Mainland and Interior.
The tournament normally attracts 16 teams in the province.
However, the tournament was reduced to seven with no Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island teams making the trip to the West Kootenay host.
In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic.
