The two highway passes bordering the West Kootenay/Boundary region are expected to see a significant accumulation of snow according to the Environment Canada website, which prompt the issuing of a Snowfall Warning for Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.

Environment Canada said it expects snow accumulations of 15 to 25 cm beginning Saturday night to Sunday morning.

“An intense Pacific frontal system moving across the B.C. Interior will give snow to most southern highway passes,” the Environment Canada website said.

“Light snow from the system will become heavier later this evening and will persist into Sunday morning. Total snow accumulations of 15 to 25 cm can be expected before the snow changes to rain midday Sunday.”

Anyone traveling the mountain passes should be to adjust their driving with changing road conditions.

“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” Environment Canada said.

“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for taillights ahead and be prepared to stop.”

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
