Another round of higher temperatures — in the mid to high 30s — is coming to the Boundary/West Kootenay/Kootenay Lake regions.

Environment Canada issued a Special Weather Statement for southern interior due to a ridge of high pressure building over B.C. will result in a period of elevated temperatures today through Wednesday.

Environment Canada said daytime highs reaching 34 to 37 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows near 17 degrees Celsius are expected.

The public is urged to watch for the effects of heat illness:

  • swelling
  • rash
  • cramps
  • fainting
  • heat exhaustion
  • heat stroke
  • the worsening of some health conditions

The public should combat those heat related effects by drinking plenty of water even before they feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.

Environment Canada has also issued a Smoky Skies Bulletin for the same areas due to smoke from the many wildfires in the region.

“Several regions in the BC Interior are being impacted or are likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours,” Environment Canada said.

“Smoke may be widespread in some regions due to many active fires.”

“Smaller fires in some regions may contribute to locally degraded air quality conditions. Localized precipitation may temporarily alleviate smoke conditions in some areas,” Environment Canada added.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as:

  • increased coughing
  • throat irritation
  • headaches
  • shortness of breath

Environment Canada said children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gasses which includes many chemicals that can harm your health.
