Donovan Fisher, new Chief Constable for Nelson Police Department

Nelson’s new Police Chief Constable Donovan Fisher is now on the job after being sworn in Friday, March 5, 2021 in the City Hall Council Chambers.

Due to COVID-19 in-person gathering restrictions, spectators were not allowed to watch the ceremony.

Nelson Mayor and Chair of Police Board John Dooley, conducted the Change of Command swearing-in ceremony for Chief Fisher, who replaced retiring Nelson Police Department Chief Constable Paul Burkart.

Chief Constable Fisher, married for more than 25 years with three children, came to Nelson Police from the RCMP as District Commander for Central District Saskatchewan.  

Superintendent Fisher has been married for over 25 years and has three children.

Previously, Chief Constable Fisher said his goal is to have a positive impact on the community of Nelson and increase overall public satisfaction by working closely with leaders and social agencies to move joint initiatives forward in a timely and effective manner.

“I am also looking forward to getting back to the frontline and community-oriented policing.”

Chief Burkart has served as Chief Constable of the Nelson Police Department since February 2016, replacing Chief Constable Wayne Holland.

Chief Burkart previously served as Inspector and Deputy Chief at NPD.

Chief Burkart began his career at Nelson Police in 2000 as a Constable after five years Calgary Police Department.
