Nelson City Councilor Brittny Anderson of the BC NDP party has been elected to succeed Michelle Mungall as MLA for the Nelson-Creston riding.

Elections BC made the results official Sunday in a media release, confirming the BC NDP party as the majority government with 57 seats.

The BC Liberal party finished with 28 and the BC Greens, currently, at two with an official recount pending in the West Vancouver-Sea to Sky riding.

“Following the conclusion of final count, a candidate is declared elected in each electoral district and the District Electoral Officer returns the writ of election to the Chief Electoral Officer,” the Elections BC media release said.

“The Chief Electoral Officer then reports the candidate elected to the Clerk of the House, formally ending the 42nd Provincial General Election in that electoral district.”

Final tally in Nelson Creston had Anderson with 7,296 votes (41.78 per cent) to 5,611 votes (32.13 per cent) for Nicole Charlwood of the BC Green Party. Tanya Finley of the BC Liberal Party finished third with 4,171 votes (23.89 per cent) with Terry Tiessen of the BC Libertarian Party fourth with 384 votes (2.20 per cent).

Elections BC said a writ cannot be returned until at least six days following the end of final count – the period within which a judicial recount can be requested.

“The writs of election will be returned the week of November 16 in every electoral district except West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, which is subject to an automatic judicial recount,” Elections BC said.

“An automatic judicial recount must take place when the difference between the top two candidates is less than 1/500 of the total ballots considered.”
