Nelson-Creston benefits from major community investments

The Nelson Civic Theatre Society and the Nelson Cycling Club are just two of the organizations benefiting from a new joint provincial-federal investment fund.
Nelson NDP MLA Michelle Mungall made the announcement recently that people in Nelson-Creston will benefit from better infrastructure, upgrades to local trails and a new cultural media arts centre thanks to the $4 million investment.
“This four million is a significant investment in our region,” said Mungall, MLA for Nelson-Creston.
“These four projects contribute to our communities’ wellbeing and opportunities for prosperity at a time when we need them more than ever.”
Projects in Nelson-Creston receiving funding include:
- Nelson Civic Theatre Society: Developing The Civic Theatre into a Cultural Media Arts Centre ($2,717,000)
- Nelson Cycling Club: Nelson and Area Trail Network Enhancement Project ($118,956)
- Central Kootenay: Woodbury Village Water System Treatment Upgrade Project ($480,840)
- Central Kootenay: RDCK East Shore Connectivity Project: installation of fibre-optic infrastructure to Riondel, Boswell, and Wyndel ($782,000).
Mungall said this local funding is part of over $228 million in grants going to B.C. communities through the first intake of Community, Culture and Recreation and Rural & Northern Communities streams of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), a provincial-federal cost-sharing program that makes investments in community and green infrastructure.
The Province of B.C. has committed nearly $62 million of the total funding for this intake.
Mungall said the second intake for both streams was announced on June 25, with nearly $160 million in combined funding available for projects.
Investments made through ICIP are designed to create economic growth, sustain well-paying jobs, build inclusive communities, and support a low-carbon, green economy.
