Environment Canada said a vigorous cold front over southeastern BC will move out of the province this morning with snow expected at Kootenay Pass and Rogers Pass.

Snow should ease at higher elevations on Highway 3, as well as TransCanada Highway for Rogers Pass, with 5-10 cm possible.

“This afternoon, an unstable airmass will bring a chance of occasionally heavy flurries and a risk of thunderstorms,” Environment Canada website said.

“The flurries will be highly localized but could result in poor visibility and rapidly accumulating snow.”

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

Road conditions are available at DriveBC.

Special Weather Statement for Boundary, West Kootenay

Just when you thought Mother Nature had shifted to spring, here comes another blast of winter.

Environment Canada issued a Special Weather Statement Saturday in effect for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.

Environment Canada said on its website that flurries are expected over high elevation highway routes of the southern BC interior Saturday night.

“A vigorous cold front will cross the southern interior of BC tonight,” Environment Canada said.

“Rain will begin this evening, but as cold air moves in behind the front snow levels will drop rapidly. As this happens rain will change to flurries over higher elevations.

Environment Canada is calling for 5 to 10 cm of snow is possible over higher elevations of the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt while the Okanagan Connector – Pennask Summit; Highway 3 – Allison Pass; and Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass will likely see 2 to 5 cm.

Environment Canada said strong, gusty winds are also possible with the passage of the front.

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions so drivers are urged to check out road conditions at DriveBC.
