Selkirk College Students Take a Turn as Santa’s Helpers

Selkirk College students in the Nelson-based Transitional Training Program have dived into the Christmas spirit by putting together 14 food hampers to help out fellow students.
Every Wednesday on the Silver King Campus, Transitional Training students embark on a weekly popcorn sale where they provide snacks to brighten the day of staff and their fellow learners. Four times a year, the students use the proceeds to purchase groceries which they then divide up between students studying a variety of different programs on the campus. This past year, students have raised more than $600 from popcorn sales.
“The Christmas hampers are always a little more special,” says Alison Roy, the Transitional Training Program instructor on the Silver King Campus. “The students say the feel like Santa’s helpers and they have a lot of fun with it. The students in this program realize how important it is that those who attend the college always have enough food for their general well-being.”
The Selkirk College Transitional Training Program has a mission to nurture interdependence and independence through meaningful learning. The program builds upon learners’ unique strengths, confidence, awareness and skills. This year’s class on the Silver King Campus has 25 students.
