Injuries, fatigue bring down Bombers at Soccer Provincials
Injuries and fatigue proved to be the undoing for the L.V. Rogers Bombers at the recent BC High School AA Boy’s Soccer Championships in Burnaby.
The Bombers fell 2-1 to Hazelton to finished 16th overall in the tournament. A goal in the 25th minute snapped a 1-1 tie, powering Hazelton to the victory.
The Bombers goal was scored from the penalty spot by Callum Cutler. LVR was awarded the penalty when Fynn Keywood was taken down in the penalty area. Keywood did not return to the game after the foul. The Bombers were already missing Keegan Carmichael due to injury.
LVR opened the tournament losing 3-1 to Langley. Carmichael opened the scoring for LVR, taking a nice pass from Keywood before chipping the goalie.
Langley scored three consecutive goals to secure the victory. Bomber captain Max Spielman played only 10 minutes due to a back injury.
LVR then dropped a 3-0 decision to Notre Dame of Vancouver. Goalkeeper Mason Street was outstanding in the loss.
The Bombers completed the round robin draw losing 5-0 to Brentwood of Burnaby. LVR finished the game without the services of Carmichael and Moss Caney.
In consolation round action, the Bombers fell short losing 4-3 to Kalamalka Lakers of Vernon. After trailing 4-0, the Bombers staged a comeback scoring three times in a 12-minute span. Goals from Spielman, Carmichael and Caney pulled LVR to within a goal for the Lakers. However, time ran out in the contest before LVR could secure the equalizer.
Spielman earned LVR’s Commissioners 16 award, for his leadership, perseverance and dedication to the team throughout the tournament.
LVR advanced to the tournament as the Kootenay Rep, capturing the zone tournament last month in Kimberley.
