Now that the flood situation has eased for another year for most residents, the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is getting a head start on conserving what aqua is left by announcing the implementation for Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures for all water systems, effective June 1st.

The RDCK said this is the first of four stages of Water Conservation Measures for RDCK water systems, with progressively stricter watering restrictions.

“Stage 1 measures are automatically applied in all systems annually from June 1st to September 30th,” the RDCK release said.

“Stricter measures may be required if demand increases significantly, hot and dry weather prevails, or if reservoirs decline to critically low levels.”

Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures include:

  *   Watering of lawns (including new lawns), gardens, trees and shrubs ONLY between the hours of 7:00 pm and 10:00 am
  *   Watering using drip irrigation, a watering can, and or hand held hose is permitted at any time.

The RDCK said Stage 2 Water Conservation Measures are currently in effect for the Riondel Water System only, effective immediately, due to the tendency for low water levels in the reservoir in the summer months.

For Stage 2 measures, watering of lawns (including new lawns), gardens, trees and shrubs is permitted ONLY between the hours of 6:00am and 10:00am and 8:00pm and 10:00pm.

A complete description of RDCK Water Conservation Measures Stages 1 through 4 can be accessed on the RDCK website.

The RDCK appreciates water users’ ongoing cooperation in adhering to the Water Conservation Measures.
