Quick response by Nelson Fire Rescue limited the damage to a business following a fire in Railtown early Thursday morning said a media release.

Fire crews responded to the call from Nelson Police Department at 2:44 a.m. Thursday of smoke at a business on Railway Street in Nelson.

The commercial building houses A3 Plumbing Heating and Gas Fitting at 608 Railway Street.

“Upon arrival, crews found moderate smoke filling the building with light smoke emitted from vents and door perimeters,” said Nelson Fire Rescue, responding immediately with two on-duty, four additional crew members and the Fire Chief.

“Crews secured a hydrant water source and prepared for an interior attack utilizing positive pressure ventilation.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said the two firefighters, entering through the business showroom, found approximately two square meters of free burning fire near the middle of the workshop. The fire was quickly extinguished with a single 1 ½” hand line.

“A fire investigation was initiated, and it was determined that a number of plastic garbage cans had burned along with their contents,” Nelson Fire Rescue said. “The origin of the fire is not suspicious in nature.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said damage was limited and the business is able to continue with usual operations due to quick extinguishment.

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services recommends metal garbage cans, particularly for commercial occupancies.
