UPDATED: Highway 3 expected to be open Saturday

DriveBC said estimated time of opening for Highway 3 on the Kootenay Pass west of Creston is Saturday morning.

Crews have been working to re-open the key stretch of road that connects the East and West Kootenay since a mudslide closed the highway Thursday. The slide, located 30 kilometers west of Creston, saw trees, rocks and mud cover the stretch of road.

The closure has seen lineups kilometers long and numerous sailing waits on the alternate route, Highway 3A, Kootenay Lake Ferry.

Mudslide closes Highway 3 west of Creston

A mudslide Thursday has closed Highway 3 between Salmo and Creston on the Kootenay Pass.

The slide, located 30 kilometers west of Creston, happened Thursday.

DriveBC said geotechnical assessement is in progress. No time has been announced on when the highway may re-open. Detour available using Kootenay Lake Ferry between Balfour and Kootenay Bay on Highway 3A from Nelson.
