Selkirk College Music Students Bring It On Home

A spectrum of sound will combine with the satisfaction of achievement at Nelson’s Shambhala Music & Performance Hall during the annual Selkirk College Contemporary Music & Technology Program showcase concert series.
Starting on March 15 and running until April 6, eleven memorable nights of music from second-year students will play out as budding stars open the door to what they have accomplished over the course of their post-secondary studies on the Tenth Street Campus.
“It’s amazing for me to see how these students grow musically from when they first arrive to the program,” says Gilles Parenteau, keyboard and arranging instructor at Selkirk College. “This is the opportunity for the community to come enjoy some terrific music and experience the passion that goes into all the performances.”
The acclaimed two-year program that has been a staple of Selkirk College’s Tenth Street Campus since 1989. The 20 graduating students will bring a range of tastes from pop and jazz to hard rock and funk to the stage at the intimate Nelson venue.
The finishing touches of their formal education leading up to graduation at the end of April, each student is required to put together the entire set from organizing rehearsals with their band to the arrangements of the songs to the staging of the show.
“This is more than just getting up there and playing,” says Parenteau, who has been mentoring Selkirk College students for almost 30 years. “Pulling off these showcases in a professional manner requires many hours of hard work and putting into practice much of what they have learned over the last two years.”
The students perform half-hour sets each, with most evening shows including two student performances.

- March 22:Selina Heyligers-Hare (soul/R&B/folk/classic rock) and Madison Dixon (blues infused country/rock)
- March 23: Tessa Frey-Mclean (folk/R&B) and Jelayna Murdoch (folk)
- March 26: Graeme Rife (progressive) and Logan Contino (blues/hip hop)
- March 27: Dari Marshall (pop/R&B) and Maddie King (pop/rock/R&B)
- March 29: Anika Wallace (indie folk) and Jobe Chen-Dokouroff (modern R&B/soul)
- April 3: Clayton Mallette (prog rock/abstract) and Kevin Wasilenkoff (funk/ragtime/rock)
- April 4: Diana Uglov (soul/folk/pop)
- April 5: Nella Banner (electro-acoustic) and Matt Flank (country rock)
- April 6: Cam Peters (funk rock fusion) and Liam Haretzmuller (metal core)
