Sunday was a sad day for Nelson Youth Soccer and Soccer enthusiasts in general.

Nelson Youth Soccer board member, coach and all round great community soccer supporter, Kerry Dyck died of cancer.

Dyck, or “Dycker” as he was known by his friends, was a devoted father of three as well as a coach and active member in the soccer community.

Born in Nelson, Kerry graduated from L.V. Rogers High School playing soccer for the Bombers varsity team.

He moved to the Lower Mainland to attend Simon Fraser University before returning to the Heritage City to raise his family with his wife Heather.

The couple has three children, Jaden, Alexis and Kylee.

Dyck, who loved the sport of soccer, continued playing in Vancouver before joining the Heritage Innkeepers Men’s Soccer Team when he moved back to the Heritage City.

He was the Innkeepers coach and manager. In the fall of 2017, the club defended their Men’s Open title, with Dyck powering the squad to the title by scoring a penalty shot during shootout giving the Innkeepers a win over Oso Negro in the final.

Dyck, who coached the Nelson Selects U18 Boy’s team in 2017, was also an instrumental member of Nelson Youth Soccer, joining the board as well as coaching for years in the house and rep program.

Dyck worked as a financial planner at Investors Group Financial Services in Nelson.

Mallard’s Source for sports would like to salute Kerry Dyck, seen here front row, middle of a team photo, taken during a fall fundraiser tournament at the Lakeside Pitch.
