The sport of soccer along with the rest of the Heritage City is reeling with the news a community-minded coach, friend and husband has been diagnosed with cancer.

Kerry Dyck, a devoted father of three as well as a coach and active member in the soccer community, is fighting Stage IV lung cancer that has metastasized to the brain.

His close friend and soccer buddy Morgan Dehnel has started a gofundme page to help with expenses as Dyck begins treatment.

“Due to the advanced stage of the cancer, his doctors have recommended alternative therapies as his best recourse,” Dehnel said on the gofundme page.

“Additionally, treatment options require out-of-pocket travel expenditures.”

The Nelson native graduated from L.V. Rogers High School playing soccer for the Bombers varsity team.

He moved to the Lower Mainland to attend Simon Fraser University before returning to the Heritage City to raise his family with his wife Heather.

The couple has three children, Jaden, Alexis and Kylee.

Dyck, who loved the sport of soccer, continued playing in Vancouver before joining the Heritage Innkeepers Men’s Soccer Team when he moved back to the Heritage City. He currently is the Innkeepers coach and manager.

Dyck, who coached the Nelson Selects U18 Boy’s team this season, was also an instrumental member of Nelson Youth Soccer, joining the board as well as coaching for years in the house and rep program.

Dyck works as a financial planner at Investors Group Financial Services in Nelson.

Friends are organizing a Co-Ed Soccer tournament Saturday, October 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lakeside Pitch to help raise money for the family.

Cost is $25 per player for the 8 vs 8 format is open to anyone over the age of 17 years.

Players will be divided evenly into teams of 10-12 players.

Organizers are hoping for 6-8 teams for the tournament.

Players can register online.

Anyone who would like to donate to the gofundme page can do so at this link.
