Businesses honoured during Chamber Excellence Awards

A handful of local businesses were honoured for some outstanding contributions during the past year at the Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards Thursday at the Adventure Hotel in Nelson.

The awards were part of the Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting, which welcomed two new directors to the board — Stephen Harris and former president Cal Renwick.

Returning members to the board include Paul Wiest, Karen Bennett, and Scott Grimshaw and Tanya Finley.

Headlining the awards was Savoy Hotel selected as Business of the Year.

The Shambhala Music Festival-owned Savoy was transformed by owner Jimmy Bundschuh, into a hotel with a nightclub and restaurant, micro-brewery and Farm Fresh café.

It’s a metamorphosis for the venerable building that previously housed several businesses including a restaurant, nightclub, pub and hostel before it burned over eight years ago.

Other awards included Adventure Hotel, a a modern, euro-style facility in the heart of Nelson, earning Tourism Excellence; Georama Growers, which has served the Kootenays since 1970, Retail Business of the Year honours and Community First Health Co-op as Professional Services Excellence.

During the award ceremony, Vince DeVito of DeVitos Shoes paid tributed to former Adventure Managing Partner Danny Rickaby, who passed away suddenly earlier this year.

The Chamber presented a cheque for $1500 to Chase and Clay Rickaby for the Bursary started in the name of Danny Rickaby.

The Bursary is intended to beneift people living in the Kootenay area who require financial assistance in any business related activity.
