In case you missed it, 2016 is almost over meaning 2017 is just around the corner.

And a few hours past the start of the New Year is the annual Polar Bear Swim at Lakeside Park — with its new sponsor, Kootenay Co-op Radio.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a swimmer, floater, young or old, everyone is invited to take the New Year plunge as Kootenay Co-op Radio has grabbed the torch to organize the Polar Bear Swim.

The annual swim takes place at Lakeside Park Beach on New Years Day — which is Sunday, January 1st. Serving chilli and hot chocolate  begins at 11:30 a.m., with the plunge in the lake at noon.

Every year more tha 70 people take the daring plunge into the west arm of Kootenay Lake from the shores of Lakeside Park beach.

KCR came into this at the eleventh hour after the Nelson Rythm Ropers decided to end their sponsorship of the event, so there are still a few details to nail down, but this is going to happen.

KCR organizer Stephanie Myers urges swimmers to wear their best wacky costume, wigs, hats, silly dresses all of this is acceptable and encouraged. Please bring a donation to ensure that this event can continue every year.

KCR will be playing some hot Hawaiian tunes to put you in the mood.

BC Ambulance will be on on the shore in the event of an emergency.

Anyone wanting to contribute or volunteer please contact Stephanie Myers at Kootenay Coop Radio, 250.352.9600 or cell 250.505.7410.
