Interested in joining the Air Cadets?

The 561 Osprey Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron Nelson starts its 2016-2017 Training year on Wednesday (September 7).

The squadron invites any youth from Nelson and area who are interested in seeing what the Air Cadet program can do for them to come to the first meeting.

The meetings are every Wednesday from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Nelson Eagles Hall at 641 Baker Street.

“I am looking forward to giving the cadets an amazing experience this year with 561 Squadron,” said Second Lieutenant Jade Hoglund, Training Officer 561 Squadron.

This will be an exciting year for the Cadets of 561 Squadron.  The first event of the year will be a day of Gliding at the Trail Airport. The cadets will experience the thrill of flight in gliders that are owned by the Air Cadet League of BC and operated by members of the Canadian Armed Forces.  All the pilots that will be flying the cadets in the gliders are former cadets themselves.

Later in the year, the squadron will be flying powered aircraft at the Nelson airport and spend a weekend in the bush learning survival skills.

The squadron runs an orienteering program, an air rifle shooting program, effective speaking and first aid, as well as it regular weekly activities.

During the summer four cadets from 561 Squadron attended Summer Training at Cadet Training Centres in British Columbia.

Cadets Nicola Anderson and Ronald White went to Alberta Head Cadet Training Centre near Victoria for General Training.

Corporal Matthew Bullen attended Basic Aviation Technology and Aerospace at Albert Head Cadet Training Centre.

Corporal Brayden Markin-Hellekson attended Basic Fitness and Sports at Vernon Cadet Training Centre

Quick Facts:

  • Cadets is the largest youth organization operated by the Government of Canada
  • There is little or no cost for the cadets to be a member of Air Cadets and Summer Training is no cost.
