Not everyone is pleased with the Kootenay Lake School District 8 facilities draft plan.

And some parents in the Slocan Valley plan to voice their displeasure in person during Tuesday’s Kootenay Lake School Board meeting at W.E. Graham in Slocan.

A large contingent of Winlaw parents are upset their local elementary school is on the chopping block following the recent release of the facilities draft plan.

The parents plan on sharing their concerns with board members prior to the start of the regular meeting.

“A large contingent of Winlaw parents will be on hand to demand answers from the Trustee regarding the decision to consider closure of Winlaw School as part of their recently passed draft which would see six schools being closed throughout the district,” a spokesperson told The Nelson Daily.

“Why would you close a school that is currently at maximum capacity, which is the goal the Board is trying to achieve, as per provincial directive?”

The first major decision coming for the upcoming school term appears to have Yahk Elementary School will be closing for 2016-2017.

Other schools being considered for potential closure include Winlaw Elementary School, Creston Education Centre, Salmo Elementary School, Trafalgar Middle School, and Jewett Elementary School.

Winlaw Elementary School is a located in Winlaw, BC, 50 kilometers west of Nelson.
