It may be the festive time of the year, but there are still members of the public playing the role of the Grinch.

Nelson Police Department Segeant Corey Hoy said police received a complaint Tuesday (December 8) of a Canada Revenue Agency scam after a member of the public said they were emailed by someone saying they’re representing the tax agency.

“The email notified the receiver that they were entitled to an additional tax refund and to click on the link provided to initiate the process,” Hoy said in a media release.

“The complainant was prompted to enter their personal information which was used maliciously. “

“This website link is not associated to the Canada Revenue Agency and has been confirmed to be a scam,” Hoy added.

Hoy said NPD strongly encourages anybody receiving these emails to not provide any personal information as the Canada Revenue Agency only conducts tax refunds via direct deposit or by cheque and never by INTERAC e-transfer.

“If any members of the public unwittingly provide any personal information or receive deceptive telemarketing, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501,” Hoy said.

Fight leads to transport to NPD cells

Nelson Police took a man into custody following an altercation in the downtown core Monday (December 7) shortly after lunch.

The call came in at approximately 12:25 p.m. for service related to two intoxicated males in a downtown alleyway.

When police arrived they observed a heavily intoxicated man fighting with another man, who left when officers arrived.

“As the intoxicated male was being arrested for being intoxicated in public, the male pulled away from police and was subsequently taken into custody after a brief struggle,” Hoy explained.

The man was transported to cells and continued to struggle with police.

He was later released from custody when sober.

Charges of being intoxicated in public are being sought in this matter.
