Numbers are in — Keep the Beat team raises $8,500
When these kids put their minds to organizing an event, good things happen.
The latest edition of Keep the Beat Nelson turned day at the park into an $8,500 donation to the War Child Canada during the nine annual event in early August at Lakeside Park.
“We raise over $8,500 through generous donations from individuals and the credit union, silent auction and a raffle. . .. This exceeded our goal of $8000,” said Tibo Kolmel, one member of the organizing committee.
The entire event is in association with War Child Canada; a non-government, non-profit organization which works with children and their families in war stricken countries around the world.
Along with a spectacular day of music, Keep the Beat organizing team of 25 local teens also had a 50-50 raffle and a silent auction featuring many beautiful items donated by local businesses, a kids activity tent with bracelet making, hula hooping, face painting and various kids games, and a communal banner.
“The funds raised may go towards launching a program in the Middle East to help Syrian refugees, or to a program in Afghanistan that empowers and educates mothers,” Kolmel explained.
Kolmel said approximately 300-400 people attended the event that ran from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Lakeside Rotary Park.
