NFD called to extinguish a grass fire
Nelson Fire Department was called to extinguish a grass fire late Tuesday on undeveloped property at the east end of Sproat Drive in the John’s Walk area of Nelson.
NFD dispatch received several 9-1-1 calls at 10:26 p.m. Tuesday reporting a fire in the Sproat Drive area.
Callers also reported hearing noises similar to firecrackers shortly before they noticed the blaze.
The on-duty crew responded immediately, with a fire truck and a utility vehicle. One off-duty member was called in from home.
When fire crews arrived, they found an area between six and nine meters of grass and weed-covered land on fire, and started fighting the blaze.
Sixty meters of attack-line hose was pulled from the truck and the area was doused with 700 litres of foam-enhanced water.
Within 20 mins, the fire was completely extinguished.
Nelson City Police arrived on the scene to begin investigation of foul play.
A subsequent fire investigation was unable to determine the cause of the fire.
Nevertheless, citizens are reminded of the hazards of firecrackers (which are illegal in Nelson) or carelessly discarded smoking materials, especially as we start into the dry and hot part of the year.
