Dr. Kelly Newhouse elected to B.C. Association of Optometrists new executive

Dr. Kelly Newhouse of Nelson was elected to the board at the recent B.C. Association of Optometrists annual conference in Vancouver.

Dr. Newhouse, who hails from Kamloops BC and moved to Nelson in 2009, was elected to the executive.

Also on the board are re-elected Dr. Sherman Tung of Vancouver as president, elected Dr. Brenda Horner of New Westminster as vice-president and Dr. Murray Hurlbert of Maple Ridge as secretary-treasurer.

Joining Dr. Newhouse on the executive are new directors Dr. Amanda Farley of Vernon, Dr. Lloyd Mah of Coquitlam and Dr. Melanie Sherk of White Rock.
The Association’s board also includes Dr. Surjinder Sahota of Abbotsford who is past president, director Dr. Michael Kellam of Nanaimo and Ladysmith, and Dr. Michael Dennis from Prince George who is B.C.’s representative to the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

The Association also honoured two Doctors of Optometry who have exemplified a commitment to the profession of optometry. Dr. Manbir Randhawa, who practices in Vancouver, was awarded the Optometrist of the Year award and Dr. Shainul Waljee, of New Westminster, was the recipient of the Young Optometrist of the Year award.

Dr. Newhouse holds a BSc in physics from UBC as well as a Doctorate in Optometry from the University of Waterloo and has travelled extensively including to Nepal, India, Ghana and Tanzania.

She also lived for a period in Australia and Germany. In 2007 Dr. Newhouse volunteered at the Sankara Eye Hospital in Coimbatore; joined in Unite for Site trip to Ghana in 2009, as well as a VOSH trip to Haiti in the Spring of 2009.
