Nelson athletes shine at 2014 BC Games

A handful of athletes from the Nelson area competed against the elite of the province at the B.C. Winter Games held last week in Mission.

The BC Winter games brings athletes together from throughout the province competing in eight zones.

Fraser Valley took home the top prize at the Games with 108 medals, including 30 gold.

Team Kootenay finished sevent with six gold, 12 silver and nine bronze for 27 medals.

Capturing silver was Ella Keelan of Crescent Valley, placing second on balance beam. Keelan also won a bronze medal in floor exercise.

Other Nelson results had Keiran Marchand finishing sixth and fifth in biathlon; Oso Punchard 21st in Giant Slalom, Cheyanne Stevens 42nd in GS and 33rd in slalom and Liam Jones 33rd in slalom.

Spencer Pearson-Atkins was fifth and seventh in 500 meter speed skating, 14th in 1500 meters, eighth in 3000 meters and fourth in Super 1000 meters.

In curling, the team of Lauren Walgren, Christina Cutler and Noelle Wang of Nelson and Robyn Flynn of Castlegar finished sixth overall while the girl’s hockey team, which includes Emma Wheeldon and Haley Elias of Nelson, placed seventh.
