This event was an opportunity to not only provide those in need in our community with food and warmth, but to give Nelson’s dedicated roller derby fans that hard-hitting entertainment they love so much and so rarely get to see in our hometown.

This event included not only a derby game but also food and coat collections, KAAP information and donations, and a special gift opening fundraiser with great prizes donated by our supportive local businesses.

From discounted spa services to free burritos to Whitewater Ski day passes, Nelson truly brought out the giving spirit and the Killjoys were only too happy to say thanks by knocking a fellow derby girl or two into the “beeramid” while onlookers enjoyed hot drinks and baked treats.

When the event came to an end (and when the derby players were done celebrating) the Killjoys, like good little elves, packed up all the gifts and prepared them for delivery.

Coats for the Koots is receiving not only two huge bags of warm jackets and more, in hopes that a few more bodies will stay tucked in and warm this chilly holiday season.

The Nelson Food Cupboard will see the benefits of lots of great healthy food donations, as quality is as important as quantity where nutrition is concerned. They also received a $100 cash donation directly from the Killjoys.

The Kootenay Animal Assistance Program (KAAP) has been working as hard as ever, and is struggling especially this fall and winter to get many homeless cats and kittens out of the cold.

The Killjoys, thankful for the support, are donating another $100 to KAAP – and these hardworking animal lovers know how to make a dollar go a long way.
