Bombers edge out WK rivals Crowe Hawks at AA Field Hockey championships

The L.V. Rogers finished a disappointing 11th at the B.C. High School AA Girl’s Field Hockey Championships in West Vancouver, one place ahead of rival J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks of Trail.

The  Bombers edged out the Hawks by playing to a scoreless draw in the 11th-12th battle Friday in West Van.

“(We) wish we could have been higher in the standings,” said Bomber coach Val Gibson.

“The other teams that play on the smooth surfaces are just getting too fast and too good with their sticks for grass players to keep up.”

LVR failed to win a game during the round robin draw against teams against host Collingwood, Crofton House and Windsor to finish fourth in the pool.

In the consolation round LVR tied North Delta 3-3.

Allie Zondervan, unassisted, Naomi Perkins, on a one timer from Tara Yowek
and Yowek unassisted, scored for the Bombers.

LVR then tied South Okanagan 3-3 with Zondervan, Jena Wheeldon and Perkins, converting a marker final 10 seconds of the game, scoring.

The final was won by Shawigan Lake School in a 1-0 game the one being on a penalty stroke in the last minute of the game.
