Twenty-five years ago the idea was put forth to host a Summer Youth Theatre program in Nelson.

In a town filled with hockey players, soccer stars, skateboarders and freestyle skiers, the idea may have been a long shot.

However, more than two decades later the program has seen hundreds of teenage actors shine on the Capitol Theatre stage.

This weekend, the 25th edition takes to the stage in the Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Directed by Geoff Burns, withmusical direction from Allison Girvan, choreographer Lynette Lightfoot and set designer Doug Scott, has a cast of 33 ranging from ages 12 to 20.

The cast, which started with more than 60 auditioning, has been rehearsing for daily through July.

This weekend the final touch is being put on stage with shows Thursday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students or $45 for a family of four, and are available in advance at the Capitol Theatre box office or online at capitoltheatre.bc.ca. To charge by phone, call 250-352-6363.

The Nelson Daily Editor Bruce Fuhr was lucky enough to get a sneak peak during the dress rehearsal Wednesday.
