The Competition bests Louie's to capture Nelson Mixed Slopitch Crown
The Competition turned a so-so regular season into playoff supremacy after knocking off defending champion Louie’s 3-1 in the A Final of the Nelson Mixed Slopitch Championships Sunday at the Lakeside Diamonds.
The Competition, typically near the top of the standings most seasons, finished the season with an average 6-9 record.
However, when the playoffs started it was The Competition swinging the hot bats and suffocating offences with a stingy defence — including a hard-fought win over perennial power Sage in championship side action Sunday.
In the A-Final, The Competition rode the hot-pitching of winner Erik Laughton to build a 2-1 lead in the final innings. The Competition added an insurance run late in the game.
Ken Anderson took the loss for Louie’s.
Sage had been rolling over teams until The Competition shut down the high-powered offence.
The dominating style continued in the final as The Competition scored just enough runs to dethrone Louie’s.
In B Division action, Fighting Aardvarks outlasted Nelson District Credit Union in a sea saw affair while Sage dumped Cait’s Crew by a lopsided margin in C division play.
The B final was an emotional affair as both teams were playing with heavy hearts after losing key players — Blair D’Andrea on the Fighting Aardvarks and Shirley Turner on NDCU — during the off season.
Regular season champion Bogustown were knocked out of tournament in the A-division semi finals.
