RDCK issues boil water notice for Edgewood water users

The Regional District Central Kootenay (RDCK) has issued a boil water notice for the users in Edgewood after recent tests classified the water at poor due to increased seasonal turbidit.

“The RDCK and Interior Health recommend that all customers drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice,” the RDCK said in a statement.

“Water intended for drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute. Boiled water should then be refrigerated in a clean, covered container.

“Customers could also choose to use bottled or distilled water, or water that has been filtered through a well-maintained treatment device.”

The RDCK consists of 11 electoral areas which covers rural property from the headwaters of the Duncan River at the north to the International border at a point south of Salmo, it also extends from an area east of Creston (Yahk) to the mountaintops west of the Arrow Lakes above Needles.

Edgewood is a settlement located on the western shore of Arrow Lake.

The release said health risks from drinking water increases as turbidity rises, particularly for at-risk populations such as young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

“Contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites can attach themselves to the suspended particles in turbid water,” the RDCK said.

“These particles can interfere with disinfection, limiting chlorine’s ability to remove or inactivate the contaminants.

Boil water notices must be posted in all public areas by business owners.
