ARTS BEAT: Spaghetti at the Civic Theatre; Slam lessons at Oxygen and cathedral crooning
It’s time to saddle up the family and head ‘em out to the Nelson Civic Theatre for spaghetti westerns at March Movie Weekend, happening March 21-24 at Nelson’s community-owned and operated movie house.
Featured on the screen in original 35mm film format on Thursday, March 21 will be Fistful of Dollars, a classic Clint Eastwood flick from 1964. This film introduced director Sergio Leone’s eccentric and highly influential style and created Eastwood’s iconic, man-with-no-name persona.
On the weekend we fast-forward into the present for Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti western-style look at the past and slavery in the American South with Django Unchained, showing on Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23.
This film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, is styled much like Fistful of Dollars and has won awards at the Oscars, Golden Globes and from the British Academy of Film and Television.
All of the above shows start at 7:30 p.m.
Also showing on the weekend in a 1:00 p.m matinee is Escape from Planet Earth. Rated G, this animated family film follows dashing astronaut and national hero Scorch Supernova (voiced by Brendan Fraser) he sets out from the planet Baab to answer a distress call form a dangerous planet.
While on the rescue mission Scorch is trapped by an evil enemy and it’s up to his nerdy brother Gary to rescue him.
Tickets for each show are available at the door. To get more information and find out what else is happening at the Civic Theatre, visit www.civictheatre.ca.
Learn to speak and slam at Oxygen
New this April at Oxygen Art Centre is a course in spoken word and slam poetry by Nelson’s own slam poet extraordinaires, Will Klatte and Elena Banfield.
You’ll learn the art of spoken word and slam poetry, which include hip hop, stand-up comedy, poetry and pretty much every style in between; find your voice and develop ways to put your thoughts, feelings, opinions and stories on paper, then make them come to life with the tools and techniques provided.
This five-week course will culminate with a public mini-slam performance where you will have the chance to put all you’ve learned in to practice. Conquer your fear, speak your mind and have fun along the way.
Slam Poetry and Spoken Word at Oxygen begins on April 8, 2013 and runs on Monday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for five weeks. To learn more, visit www.oxygenartcentre.org or e-mail [email protected].
