Welcome to the first installment of Arts Beat, The Nelson Daily’s one-stop source for all things arts-related in Nelson and surrounding area.

Arts Beat will feature listings about what’s happening on the arts scene in Nelson and profile the Queen City’s best artists, musicians and performers.

An Evening of Stand-up Comedy at the Capitol

Vancouver-based comedian and world record holder for the most impressions in one minute, Patrick Maliha headlines an evening of laughter slated for the Capitol Theatre – this Saturday, March 9.

Maliha, whose act is described as Ray Romano meets a 21st Century Don Rickles, has had the prestigious honour of being the closing act of the gala performance at the CBC’s Winnipeg Comedy Festival and had his own hour-long comedy special that aired on CTV and The Comedy Network to rave reviews.

Fellow Vancouver comic, Ben McGinnis will also take the stage on Saturday. McGinnis is a funny man who won Vancouver’s “funniest comic with a day job competition” in 2007 and comes armed with a “caustic wit.

Opening the show will be Nelson’s own Cultural Ambassador for 2013, Lucas Meyers, who will appear as one or more of his many alter egos like Steven the Art Star and Randy from Creston.

Also appearing at the Capitol this week are acclaimed songstress, Martha Wainrighton March 7 and the gypsy sounds of Ensemble Caprice on March 8.

Shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are available online or at the door.

Oxygen Art Spring Break Art Camp registration happening now

Spring Break Art Camp 2013 at the Oxygen Art Centre begins on March 11 and registration is happening now.

This year’s camp features plenty of great activities for young people, including puppetry, theatre performance and mask-making, and a stop-motion animation workshop – all taught by experienced, passionate instructors.

“The arts are under-represented in our schools and communities today,” says Art Camp founder Anita Levesque on the Oxygen Arts website.

“Understanding the importance of art education for our children and youth has been the core inspiration behind our children’s art programming over the past three years. It is with great joy that we see this program growing and becoming a consistent and reliable way for parents to enrich their children’s lives through art.”

Lookback: Slava Doval’s FolkFusion Dance Showcase

Local dancer, Slava Doval brought her FolkFusion Dance Showcase to the stage at the Capitol Theatre last week and received rave reviews from people who attended.

The show featured over 60 dancers, some as young as four years-old, and a diverse array of dance styles from around the world like Bollywood, cumbia, contemporary, street jazz, hip hop, and more.

“Bravo! It was a much bigger show than expected – tremendously entertaining and inspiring,” said one person on the event’s Facebook page. “Thank you for the wonderful gifts you all shared tonight.”
