Save On Foods Nelson International Novice Shootout comes to Nelson this weekend; skiers at Whitewater for Teck Slalom
Who care if the NHL ever goes back to playing hockey.
The real stars of the game are heading to the Heritage City this weekend for the annual Save On Foods Nelson International Novice Shootout.
A dozen teams from Spokane, Creston, Beaver Valley, Trail and Castlegar are en route the Nelson to play in the prestigious minor hockey tournament for players ages five to eight years old.
The tournament begins Friday in the Nelson and District Community Complex and Civic Centre Arenas.
Each team plays three games.
The host minor hockey association has three teams entered — Nelson Ice Knights, Nelson Leafs and Nelson Chargers.
Tournament officials expect more than 175 players and 350 family members in the Heritage City this weekend.
The tournament concludes Sunday.
Whitewater hosts first Teck Kootenay Zone Slalom Race of season
Meanwhile, at Whitewater Ski Resort, more than 60 athletes are slated to attend the Teck Kootenay Zone Slalom Race.
The Kootenay Zone is one of four ski zones in the province.
Skiers from Red Mountain Racers, Salmo Ski Team, Summit Lake Racers, Kimberly, Fernie, and Panorama will be front and center at Whitewater for two days of races in the U12-U16 and Masters (over 21 years) event.
The racers will load the lifts beginning at 8 a.m. for course inspection on both days.
The Whitewater race is the first of many for the local ski club.
Whitewater skiers, under the direction of coach Dylan Henderson, will be travelling to Mount Washington on Vancouver Island and Whistler this season as well as attending other zone races in the Kootenays.
