Bombers rally back from heartbreaking loss to dump Caledonia at AAA provincials
The L.V. Rogers Bombers shook off a heart-breaking loss and rally past Caledonia of Terrace 23-25,25-20,15-10 in consolation round play at the B.C. High School AAA Girl’s Volleyball Championships Saturday in Vancouver.
The result lifted the Bombers into 15th spot in the tournament.
“In final match we came back from two devastating losses and found a way to overcome the previous upsets with the desire to win,” said Bomber coach Jennifer Kidd.
We played the best game yet and came out the winner to hold 15th place.”
The sad experience came in earlier play against Kelly Road of Prince George.
After dropping the first game 23-25, LVR rallied back to square the match with a 25-20 win only to see Kelly Road won the third set 15-10.
The Bombers, finishing fourth in round robin play, lost the opening match of the playoffs to Seaquam Secondary of Delta.
The loss matched LVR against Sentinel Secondary of West Van. The Bombers were in the match from start to finish, only to see the West Van squad win the match 25-23, 26-24.
“We haven’t had strong opposition since middle of October and took a few games to get into the competition, as tournament progressed so did our level of play,” Kidd explained.
“Without regular, high level competition, it’s difficult to maintain a strong mental state when we make mistakes, something our team struggled with all week.”
The win over Caledonia concludes the volleyball season for the Bombers.
However, Kidd and co-coach Megan Coupland are charged up for next season already.
“Megan and I are very proud of the girls for the way they played throughout the week and that they found a way to overcome the losses and continue to push to play better,” said Kidd.
“The group as a whole has improved drastically this year, in skill, court awareness and team play.”
“Although we will truly miss captain and Grade 12 student Jayden Roch, power hitter Becca Schrader and exchange student Josephine Hellmeire, we have a solid foundation of players ready for next season,” Kidd added.
