RCMP Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens Commanding Officer of E Division BC RCMP, presented awards of distinction and long service medals to over 130 recipients in Vernon this past Wednesday.

An equal number of supporting family members and friends were also on hand to show support to the recipients.

C.O. Deputy Commissioner Callens spoke of the selfless dedication and professionalism exemplified by all of the recipients in serving their communities. RCMP officers, civilian employees and volunteers were honoured.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, Commanding Officer’s commendations and longs service medals were presented to recipients representing many of the Southeast District RCMP detachments.

The Southeast District Operational Communications Center A watch was recognized for their professionalism shown in handling the February 2010 Revelstoke Avalanche.

On February 13th, 2010, they received the emerging reports of an avalanche in which information indicated that possibly over 200 persons had been buried in a massive slide.

A watch coordinated the telecommunications for the integrated emergency response by providing communications support to emergency responders and inquiries from the public during the first 12 hours of the avalanche.

A very poignant presentation exemplifying the ultimate sacrifice made by a law enforcement officer was made to  Annie Levigne widow of Vernon RCMP Auxiliary Constable Glen Evely.

Levigne received the RCMP Memorial Memento which was created in 2005 and presented to next of kin in honour of fallen RCMP members.

Auxiliary Cst Glen Every was killed in the line of duty on Saturday, November 13, 2004.

Auxiliary Constable Glen Evely was on duty and killed when a suspect in a stolen vehicle collided with the patrol car he was riding in while on duty as a sworn auxiliary member of the RCMP.
