Environment Canada called off its thunderstorm warning for the Kootenay region.

However, the system passed by the region, heading for Alberta.

The region will be blessed with sunny skies through the rest of the week with highs of 37 C Saturday.

Enviroment Canada issues thunderstorm warning for Kootenays

Just when residents in the West Kootenay thought they’d had enough of Mother Nature’s gnarly attitude, the grand weather lady is at is again.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning, complete with large hail and damaging winds, for the Kootenays, as soon as Tuesday evening.

The potential exists for some of the thunderstorms to become severe.

The Environment Canada website said main threats from the severe thunderstorms are damaging wind gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour, torrential downpours and hail.

Some tips on how to be protected during a thunderstorm are:

1. Find shelter right away — inhabited buildings (those grounded with plumbing, electrical systems, and, if possible, lightning rods) are best.

2. Watch the skies for rain, darkening skies, or towering cumulonimbus clouds.

3. After storm has passed stay inside at least 30 minutes after the last strike.

If there is no hope of finding shelter, squat on the ground, with the least parts of the body touching the ground and feet close together.
