Cowan, Matthews golden for Neptunes in Creston
A month into the Kootenay Summer Swim Association season and the Nelson Neptunes continue to get better with more time in the pool.
Sage Cowan and Samuel Matthew each won gold to pace the Neptunes to a fifth-place finish at the latest stop on the Kootenay tour Sunday in Creston.
Trail Stingrays continue to dominate the Kootenay scene with its third first-place finish of the season.
Rival Castlegar was second with upstart Kimberley third. Host Creston edged the Neptunes for fourth spot while Grand Forks finished sixth.
“We continue to be happy with the results of every meet,” said Neptune coach Rebecca Afford.
“The best times are still coming and often a surprising amount of time comes off (eight or more seconds) considering that there is a swim meet every weekend.”
Cowan won gold in Division four girls while Matthews topped Division four boys.
Nelson won a quartet of bronze medals with Jaylen Rushton finishing third in Division on girls; Olivia Cowan in Division three girls; Evan Best in Divisoin three boys; Emma Borhi in Division five girls and coach Afford in Division seven girls.
“We had a small turn out to this meet mainly consisting of a core group of families, but we are very pleased with their dedication and their races,” said Afford.
The Neptunes are idle this Canada Day weekend before traveling to Colville, Washington for the next mee July 7-8.
We have next weekend off for Canada Day; we will be in Colville the following weekend.
