Ghostriders reach back into the past to find new skipper
The Fernie Ghostriders have decided to reach back into the past to find the next coach and GM of the club with the hiring of Barry Wolff as the teams’ new skipper.
Wolff replaces Will Verner as the decision-maker and bench boss of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League power.
Verner, who has been with the Rider for the past five seasons, decided to retire from coaching to pursue a business opportunity in the Okanagan.
Wolff, who comes to the East Kootenay squad with Junior A hockey experience in the B.C. and Alberta leagues, formerly held the top job in Fernie from 2001-04.
Heaven moves from Thunder Cats to Smokies
Creston coach Brent Heaven is leaving the Thunder Cats to take a job as assistant coach with Trail of the B.C. Hockey League.
Heaven spent six seasons as head coach and general manager of KIJHL teams in Castlegar and Creston.
Last season, Heaven’s Thunder Cats posted a 30-17-0-5 record, finishing third in the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Division.
Heaven has also spent time as a co-coach with former Leaf skipper Simon Wheeldon with the Kootenay Ice of the B.C. Major Midget League.
Heaven joins a Trail team that struggled to a league worst 11-42-1-6 record.
Creston is currently accepting applications until May 25 for a new coach and GM. Interested applicants should send resumes to [email protected]
