Nelson man pleads guilty to aggravated assault in Calgary court

April 26th, 2012

A Nelson man has pleaded guilty earlier this month in Calgary to aggravated assault for causing life-threatening injuries to Philippe Christopher (Philly) Roch, 38, in connection with the incident at a downtown  fast food eatery on March 20, 2009.

Mark John Jacobson, 28, admitted to viciously punching and kicking a customer who came to the aid of a fast food clerk who was being verbally harassed.

Roch was in line behind Jacobson and a friend when he saw how they were abusing the clerk about 2:20 a.m. at the Subway restaurant at 705 8th St. S.W.

After words were exchanged, Jacobson punched Roch, causing him to fall to the floor. When Roch was down, he continued punching the victim in the face and body.

Jacobson picked Roch up, then threw him down again, continuing to punch him. Gunville then moved closer and also punched and kicked Roch repeatedly, again causing the victim to fall to the floor.

Jacobson, who was recognized in the on store video, was subsequently arrested in Nelson on April 13, 2010, after a warrant was issued.

Lawyers will be back in court for sentencing arguments on June 15.
