Nakusp tops Peewee House tourney, Stingrays dump Leafs in all-Nelson battle

Nakusp Falcons dumped Westside Warriors 8-3 to capture the top prize at the Nelson Minor Hockey Peewee House Tournament Sunday at the NDCC Arena.

Jacob LaPlante scored four times and Hailey Herridge added a pair to lead the Falcons.

The tournament featured two Nelson teams — Stingrays and Leafs.

The host clubs finished the tourney with a tie between them and met in the playoff round with the Stingrays coming out on top 5-1. Quinn Hall scored three times to lead the Rays. Bradley Sookero added a pair.

Alix Renwick replied for the Leafs.

The Leafs failed to win in three games during the preliminary round. Nelson lost 3-0 to Nakusp, 4-2 to Penticton and 8-2 to Kelowna.

Emma Wheeldon and Cassidy Kiraly scored in the Penticton contest while Curtis Van Zanden had both goals against Kelowna.

Noah Gaffran played the entire tournament for the Leafs after his teammate was injured.

Meanwhile, the Stingrays lost 9-4 to Rossland/Trail, 11-2 to Westside before finishing with a 3-3 tie against Vernon.

Hall scored twice while Jaydon Wouters and Cody St. Thomas added singles in the opening loss to Rossland/Trail.

St. Thomas and Sookero scored against Westside while Hall, with a pair, and Jaron Ivanisko scored in the Vernon tie.
