One intoxicated 25-year-old man took exception to the peaceful occupation of City Hall Wednesday evening.

Several people are still camped and gathered around the Occupy Nelson protest site on the grounds in front of City Hall, days after the Saturday, Oct. 15 event.

Around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night Nelson Police Department (NPD) members responded to a report of an altercation between two men at the Occupy Nelson protest site.

Upon arrival, officers observed several protestors engaged in a verbal dispute and disturbance. NPD members conducted an investigation into the incident and it was alleged that a 25-year-old Nelson man entered the protest grounds in an intoxicated state.

Witnesses reported the man was approached in a peaceful manner by several protestors and asked to leave the area, given his state of intoxication.

However, the intoxicated man then allegedly assaulted a 27-year-old Nelson resident protestor. The victim sustained minor injuries to his facial area.

NPD members arrested the suspect and he was later released on court documents with conditions. The man is scheduled to appear in Nelson Provincial Court on Jan. 10.
