Nick Farmer scored three times to power the Spokane Braves to a 5-3 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Nelson Leafs Sunday afternoon in the Lilac City.

The win allowed the Braves, one of the youngest teams in the KIJHL, to keep pace with the Murdoch Division leading Leafs.

It was also the first time this season Spokane has defeated the Leafs.
Nelson, trailing 2-0 after the first period, rallied back to tie the game on a pair of goal by Colton Mamlsten — the second coming on the power play.

But Uriah Machuga scored with 43 seconds remaining in the middle frame to put Spokane in the lead for good.

Farmer scored his second of the game seven minutes into the third period to increase the lead to 4-2.

Patrick Martens answered Farmer with a goal six minutes remaining in the game.

With Leaf goalie Patrick Defoe on the bench for an extra attacker, Farmer scores his third of the game into an empty net.

Nelson, 8-3-0-1, out shot the Braves 43-34 in the game. The Leafs remain three points in front of idle Beaver Valley, but have played three more games.

Nelson remains on the road for a pair of games Friday in Summerland and Saturday in Penticton.

Next home game is Wednesday, October 19th against Beaver Valley.
