Bomber seniors Andrea Stinson and Shawn DeGroot claim Kootenay Cross Country titles Wednesday in Fernie

Bomber seniors Andrea Stinson and Shawn DeGroot lived up to some pre-race hype by capturing respective Kootenay High School Cross Country titles Wednesday in Fernie.

The L.V. Rogers runner, who dominated the West Kootenay circuit for most of the season, won the Senior Girl’s crown in a time of twenty minutes, 17 seconds.

The time was 31 seconds better than Prince Charles runner Emily Simpson.

DeGroot defended the Senior Boy’s crown, edging Trafalgar’s Micah May by 59 seconds. DeGroot finished in a time of 27:50.
May, a Grade 8 runner competing against senior high school, continued his surprising season by capturing the silver medal in the East Kootenay City.

The top runners in each category qualifies for the B.C. High School Cross Country Championships November 5th in Kelowna.

Stinson held off a push by East Kootenay runners to top the field.

After Simpson, three East Kootenay competitors — Tiara Livingston of Invermere David Thompson, Prince Charles runner Wiebke Zimmerman and Lindsay Weech of Fernie — completed the top five finishers.

Taylor Wilson of Kaslo’s J. V. Humphries, who pushed Stinson all season, placed sixth.

Katy Camilleri of LVR finished tenth while Ellie Hewat of JVH took 13th, Darya Huser of Salmo 16th, and Larissa Napora of LVR 18th.

Tasha Hewat of JVH was 20th.

West Kootenay runners finished with much better results in the boy’s race.

Walker Dempster of LVR finished fourth behind third-place runner Nic Mottl of Prince Charles.

Joe Cox of JVH was fifth with Levi Smith of LVR seventh, Conrad Watt of JVH eighth, Owen Thurston of LVR ninth, Cail Spencer of LVR 10th, Eli Bukoski of JVH 11th, Oliver Hail of LVR 18th and James Janz of LVR 20th.

LVR boy’s won the team title while Prince Charles of Creston took the girl’s crown. The Bomber girls finished third.
