The L.V. Rogers Bombers finished in the middle of the pack during an opening-weekend High School Field Hockey playday Saturday at Pass Creek Park in Castlegar.

The Bombers concluded the five-team event in third spot behind Rossland and South Okanagan Hornet A team from Oliver.

The Bombers defeated South Okanagan B twice by scores of 1-0 and 3-1.

Morag Paterson scored the only goal LVR would need in the game.

In the second contest Sydney Zondervan banged in a pair while Grade nine Abbie Bouchier-Willans added a single.

LVR then dropped a 2-0 decision to South Okanagan. Paterson played in net, and, according to head coach Val Gibson was “amazing” between the pipes.

“We lost 2-0 but it could have been a lot worse,” said Gibson.
In the other game, LVR dropped a 4-1 decision to rival Rossland Royals.

“Our goalie for that game was Grade 9 Tara Yowek,” Gibson explained. “She played so crazy good against Grade 12’s.”

“Tara will become a wonderful goalie,” Gibson added. “She is aggressive and quick on her feet and makes good decisions about when to challenge or not.”

Rachel McKenzie scored the lone goal for LVR.

Gibson was pleased with the performance of the Trafalgar Totem grads now at LVR — Hailee Gerun, Jena Wheeldon, and Lauren Walgren.

“All grade 9’s played at a very high level,” she said. “(Plus) Mykayla Commandeur played superb and showed a lot of Grade 12 leadership.”

“And at centre mid, Paige Mansveld stole the show,” Gibson added.

The Bombers return to the pitch Wednesday when the club plays at Pass Creek Park. Game time is 4 p.m.
